Description

Photocopy of a photocopied page from a Berks County Quarter Sessions Office{1} records book . Highlighted line begins discussion of a petition to build a road from ”Edward Lane’s” to “Mannitawny”. Peition was made by Henry Sprogel and ”Mounce Jones” on behalf of themselves and others. In the full text of the Petition, not transcribed in this abstract, Mounce Jones referred to himself and others as proprietors of “Plantations.” A 1715 renewed Petition excerpted in the next record on this page requested that the proposed road extend to the Monocacy, just west of the perimeter of the Manatawny^ settlement. Note written in pencil appearing in the upper right-hand corner was written by Dr. Donald A Shelley. FOOTNOTE {1} In 1709 and 1715 still part of the colonial Philadelphia County. ^Added Note: Louis Richards, early 20th century historian and President of the Berks County Historical Society from 1902 to 1917 read a paper to the Society on September 12, 1911 entitled “The Ancient Swedish Settlement At Morlatton”. This address was published in 1923 in Volume III of the “Transactions of the Historical Society of Berks County.” Included is the statement that “The region for many miles surrounding was known in provincial history as Manathanim, derived from the Indian name of the Creek…The name Morlatton, by which this church has been known for nearly a century and a half is, I have no doubt, a corruption of Manating, a later version of the name Manathanim…subsequently …employed to designate the locality.”
