Description
Detail of north replacement jamb in east kitchen doorway.
The stone sill, moved 2-3 inches to the north during restoration, now extends 5.5 inches north from the jamb under the restored pier north of the doorway and about 8.5 inches south of the south jamb. The replacement jambs are anchored into the original stone sill through traditional method of driving an iron pin into the jamb foot and anchoring the pin in a mortise chiseled into the sill. The original northern mortise is now positioned under the pier to the right of the jamb in this photo. The southern mortise is under the south replacement jamb [see DTR09PH63--1001.01.147] but does not serve as the seat for its anchor pin. Note corner bead jamb detail ["filleted bead," or "rabbet and quarter round," as it is described in a 1797 Chester County ‘Practical House Carpenter’s Directory,' classifying door frames with this detail as “plain”].
