Description

Description: Image #1: Original black and white photographic print showing a south perspective view of the White Horse Tavern before restoration. Note (in blue pen) on reverse of photo reads, "WHITE HORSE TAVERN C.1765 BEFORE RESTORATION. TAKEN 1971." The Board minutes of 12/21/70 state "Three houses were made out of the inn and nothing original remains of the interior except one door, window frame, and a foundation of a walk-in fireplace." Image #4: 1978 colored photographic print of original section of White Horse Tavern, with ink notation on verso: "Installing Fireplace Chimney 1978 T.R.B." [Theresa R. Beard, one of the Trust's founders and multiple-term President of the Board]. Compare the halftone photo published in the Pennsylvania German magazine in January, 1902, in archive number WHTPH27--1007.01.031. Details in Image #1 include: flashing course for horizontal gable cornice (pediment base), Victorian-era porch, dressed and coursed masonry eaves wall, random-rubble masonry gable wall; two chimneys, probably both 19th century stove chimneys from the apartments then in the building. Image #4 shows bricklayers finishing of the reconstruction of the corbelled brick chimney serving the restored fireplace on the first floor of the tavern; also seen is the re-constructed hood over the original doorway. See additional images [#2 & 3] for digital copy of reverse of photo and a slightly different SW perspective view [#4413, 4/12/15]. Laurence Ward, April 2016
